Railway communications systems
Objective
Railway communication systems are a key component of railways, providing the required conditions for a secure and effective operation of trains. In the transition from GSM-R to FRMCS (Future Rail Mobile Communications System), also known as 5G-R, many new problems have to be addressed, namely the implementation of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output), which implies locating multiple antennas on trains, in a way that the MIMO system works efficiently. Given the multiple obstacles existing on the roof of a train (e.g., air-conditioner convectors and pantographs), the proper location of antennas in these circumstances requires evaluating their characteristics (e.g., radiation patterns, gain, polarisation and beamwidths) on the exact positions and their influence on MIMO performance and numerical methods have been used for this evaluation, Nullspace (https://www.nullspaceinc.com) has been our choice for this project.
