Filipe Cardoso and António Serrador have contributed to the final inputs for the project review. António Serrador is developing a model where handovers in heterogeneous networks are used to save energy.

Carla Oliveira and Michal Mackowiak contributed for the WPR1 presentation at the last project Dissemination Day, jointly organised with the COST 2100 meeting, on March 2-3 in Paris, France.

The team is working on the measurement section of the new website, which should be available soon. Eleven more information actions were held in February and more are scheduled for the coming months. Regarding Prémio monIT, training actions on the measurement equipment were given to s-ome groups. In the meanwhile, the deadline for the delivery of the second progress report is approaching (March 14th).

Daniel Sebastião and João Gonçalves are working on the next deliverable (D.A.7 “New business models and business dynamics of the future networks”). Within the Open Connectivity Work Package, Luísa Caeiro and Lúcio Ferreira are currently working on the definition of the architecture and network management theme.

The project has finished.

Within the context of Task 4.1 leadership by Filipe Cardoso, the most promising tracks issue is being discussed and will be finalised in the Santander general meeting that will be held on February. A document with an initial definition of the common track on MIMO EE Transmission, which integrates three different concepts (Relative MIMO gain, Precoding and Scheduling Techniques, and MIMO Modelling and Power-Performance Optimisation in Pico cells), was delivered. António Serrador issued a set of documents about the most promising tracks related with Task 3.3, additionally work is being prepared related to further simulations and track publications

The project has finished its technical activity, and only a dissemination workshop is to be held.

Information actions continue to be one of the major action points for the Project. Seven more actions were held in January and more are scheduled for the coming months. The agenda is available on the calendar section of the new website. Also, monIT Project is already in Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Projecto-monIT/115728948482056) and Twitter (http://twitter.com/pmonIT), where all these events are presented.

Daniel Sebastião and João Gonçalves finalised their work on Deliverable D.A.1 “Description of project wide scenarios and use cases”, and are now starting the work on the next deliverable (D.A.7 “New business models and business dynamics of the future networks”). Also, work on dissemination aspects is on-going with an updated list of conferences in the SAIL’s calendar. Luísa Caeiro and Lúcio Ferreira are preparing the inputs for the next meeting.

António Serrador has updated the contribution to Deliverable D3.1 “Most promising tracks of green network technologies”, according to internal reviewers, and the final version was issued. Similarly, concerning Filipe Cardoso and Deliverable D4.1 “Most promising tracks of green radio technologies”.

Work on a Smart Cities white paper is ongoing.

The final Deliverable DR1.3 “Final report on the activities and results of WPR.1” is now available on the N++ server for review.

The new website from the Project is already online. It has a new look and new functionalities. Come explore it! Also, information actions continued to be one of the major action points for the Project. In December two more actions were done in a University (Universidade da Beira Interior) and on a school (Escola Secundária de Sesimbra). A total of 72 teams (from former 98) are still competing for Prémio monIT after evaluation of the first progress report!

Lúcio Ferreira and Luisa Caeiro worked on the definition of a use-case entitled “Creating and Sustaining the Connectivity in Wireless Challenged Networks” within WP-C “Open Connectivity”. Carla Oliveira and Michal Mackowiak presented their works at the Bologna meeting.

António Serrador has updated the contribution on Deliverable D3.1 “Most promising tracks of green network technologies”, by performing simulations in order to obtain the energy efficiency gains in heterogeneous networks; this is mainly obtained by moving mobile terminals to the most efficient base stations. Filipe Cardoso finalised his work as chapter editor of Deliverable D4.1 “Most promising tracks of green radio technologies” on multi-antenna techniques.

Work on a White paper on “Smart Cities” has begun.

António Serrador has contributed to the ViCE-WiCom platform (http://www.vicewicom.eu) with the “Train Station Scenario”, which is an open collaboration space where educational material and research partners in the area of wireless communication can be found. António Serrador and Luisa Caeiro have contributed to DR9.3 (WPR9 final deliverable) on radio resource management and networks virtualisation. Carla Oliveira and Michal Mackowiak contributed to DR1.3 on statistical models for Body Area Networks.

With the beginning of another school year, public actions in schools have returned. In this period, there was a collaboration with the Secondary School of Tramagal, Santarém, including measurements and a presentation; and several actions have already been scheduled for the upcoming months. Also, the 2nd Edition of Prémio monIT had around 100 applications, from 48 schools of 15 districts and 2 autonomous regions, comprising 380 students and 56 teachers.

António Serrador has presented energy efficiency metrics for radio resource management and related cost functions on cellular networks.

The continuous monitoring in Lisbon was concluded, and a report on the collaboration with the City Council of Lisbon is available. monIT’s website got a makeover, and will have a new image. The theme of the 2011 edition of Prémio monIT is “Radiofrequencies and Society”, registrations being available in October.

Daniel Sebastião and João Gonçalves delivered the final contribution to the deliverable D-1.4 “Final Assessment on the Non-technical Drivers” and finalised the work on the book. Filipe Cardoso has finalised the deliverable D-5.5 “Physical Layer Awareness”. Lúcio Ferreira finalised the contribution to deliverable D-5.3 “Evaluation of Generic Path architecture and mechanisms” with a chapter entitled “Wireless Mesh Networks: A design exercise for the GP Model”, as well as the deliverable D-5.4 “In Network Management for Generic Path”, presenting the achievements of WP4 & WP5 cross task. A paper entitled “Fiat Object: Object Orientation in Future Internet”, in collaboration with University of Basel, has been submitted to the Computer Networks Journal. The project has finished.

Carla Oliveira is still working on the “Body Communications” section of the COST book. Carla Oliveira presented a TD, at the Aalborg meeting, entitled “A Statistical Analysis of User’s Influence in Body Area Networks”. António Serrador has attended the WPR9 meeting by presenting the IST-TUL contributions to the third and last WPR9 deliverable, DR-9.3.

The final ceremony of Prémio monIT was on June 26th, where the 10 finalist teams presented their work to the Final Jury and to an auditorium of more than one hundred people. The prizes were delivered to the teams of pupils as follows: 1st place to ES Raul Proença, Caldas da Rainha; 2nd place to EP D. Mariana Seixas, Viseu; 3rd place to ES do Lumiar, Lisboa. Two honorary awards were also given to Centro de Estudos de Fátima and ES Esmoriz. Congratulations to all the pupils for the valuable projects! The preparations for the next year’s edition of Prémio monIT are now underway.

Daniel Sebastião and João Gonçalves are working on the final deliverable from WP1 (D-1.4 – “Final Assessment on the Non-technical Drivers”) and on the 4WARD book. António Serrador as WP3 contact person has contributed to D-5.5 “Physical Layer Awareness” with Virtual Networks issues in the Physical Layer Awareness context; António Serrador has also contributed to D-3.2.1 “Virtualisation Approach: Evaluation and Integration – Update” as a reviewer. Filipe Cardoso has finished editing the additional deliverable D-5.5 “Physical Layer Awareness”. Also, a paper entitled “Physical Layer Aware Network Architecture for the Future Internet” has been submitted to IEEE Communications Magazine. Lúcio Ferreira contributed to deliverable D-5.3 “Evaluation of Generic Path architecture and mechanisms” with a chapter entitled “Wireless Mesh Networks: A design exercise for the GP Model”. António Serrador has presented a contribution to WP3 report IM3.1 with algorithms on joint admission control and multi cell scheduling and management. Filipe Cardoso continues his work on the coordination of task T4.1, being focused on report IM4.1 preparation.

Work on the document on the 5th Workshop on Applications and on the Applications chapter for the SRA is being conducted.

A massive campaign of public information actions was conducted in schools and health services of Azores and Madeira islands. Further actions were also conducted at Santa Maria da Feira, Santo Tirso and for schools visiting IST (DEEC-Telecommunications). Regarding measurements, 6 more stations were installed in Lisbon, totalising 14 continuous monitoring locations in collaboration with the Municipality of Lisbon. Daily results from these stations can be seen in monIT’s website. In the course of this collaboration, a presentation/press conference was done on May 18th, announcing the results already obtained, having had quite a bit of media coverage (newspapers, radio and TV). On Prémio monIT, the list of the 10 finalist teams was announced on May 31st.
